Lessons for March 4, 2007 – Second Sunday in Lent The first lesson Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 Afterward the Lord spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, "Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great." [2] But Abram replied, "O Sovereign Lord, what good are all your blessings when I don't even have a son? Since I don't have a son, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. [3] You have given me no children, so one of my servants will have to be my heir." [4] Then the Lord said to him, "No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own to inherit everything I am giving you." [5] Then the Lord brought Abram outside beneath the night sky and told him, "Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that—too many to count!" [6] And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord declared him righteous because of his faith. [7] Then the Lord told him, "I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land." [8] But Abram replied, "O Sovereign Lord, how can I be sure that you will give it to me?" [9] Then the Lord told him, "Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." [10] Abram took all these and killed them. He cut each one down the middle and laid the halves side by side. He did not, however, divide the birds in half. [11] Some vultures came down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away. [12] That evening, as the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep. He saw a terrifying vision of darkness and horror. [17] As the sun went down and it became dark, Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses. [18] So the Lord made a covenant with Abram that day and said, "I have given this land to your descendants, all the way from the border of Egypt to the great Euphrates River. (NLT) Psalm 27 L. The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? C. The Lord protects me from danger—so why should I tremble? L. When evil people come to destroy me, when my enemies and foes attack me, C. they will stumble and fall. L. Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will know no fear. C. Even if they attack me, I remain confident. L. The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most— C. is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, L. delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his Temple. C. For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. L. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. C. Then I will hold my head high, above my enemies who surround me. L. At his Tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music. C. Listen to my pleading, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! L. My heart has heard you say, "Come and talk with me." C. And my heart responds, "Lord, I am coming." L. Do not hide yourself from me. Do not reject your servant in anger. C. You have always been my helper. L. Don't leave me now; don't abandon me, O God of my salvation! C. Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close. L. Teach me how to live, O Lord. C. Lead me along the path of honesty, for my enemies are waiting for me to fall. L. Do not let me fall into their hands. C. For they accuse me of things I've never done and breathe out violence against me. L. Yet I am confident that I will see the Lord's goodness while I am here in the land of the living. C. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord. (NLT) The second lesson Philippians 3:17-4:1 Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. [18] For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. [19] Their future is eternal destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and all they think about is this life here on earth. [20] But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. [21] He will take these weak mortal bodies of ours and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same mighty power that he will use to conquer everything, everywhere. [4:1] Dear brothers and sisters, I love you and long to see you, for you are my joy and the reward for my work. So please stay true to the Lord, my dear friends. (NLT) The Gospel Lesson Luke 13:31-35 A few minutes later some Pharisees said to him, "Get out of here if you want to live, because Herod Antipas wants to kill you!" [32] Jesus replied, "Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and doing miracles of healing today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose. [33] Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn't do for a prophet of God to be killed except in Jerusalem! [34] "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God's messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me. [35] And now look, your house is left to you empty. And you will never see me again until you say, 'Bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!' " (NLT)
